Galactic Double Daisy Cutter

At Half Acre, Chicago Craft Beer Week signifies the start of our sweat season. All industries have one, the winter holidays, back to school, the rotation of playoff runs. As temps rise, people peel out of their homes and we push ourselves to match the collective thirst.

To ring the bell, we brew Galactic Double Daisy Cutter. A war cry in honor of easy  enjoyment and basic pleasure. Our flagship pale ale, tactfully swoll and layered in testament to the Galaxy hop.

In the end, we're all working towards the same thing; to hang tuff with our favorite creatures and have flowing access to the beers that make us feel most at home.

Coven

Coven_v1.jpg

On Friday we release Coven Maibock.

This is a beer we brewed with Oxbow out of Maine.  We were fortunate to meet Tim before Oxbow was born and since then they’ve built a brewery rooted in authentic beers that personally align with their culture.  If you haven’t been to Maine to check out their brewing oasis split between the woods of Newcastle and Portland, you should leave your job and go.

Oxbow brews Farmhouse beers that typically hit wood, are often blended and take skillful advantage of creative additions, bugs and time.  We brew micro ales and lagers that often see generous hopping programs.  When setting out to brew beer together, we quickly landed on a Maibock. Neither of our breweries have made the style and we're both hitting an upcoming brewing conference in Philadelphia where we felt it would be nice to drink Maibock together.

A traditional spring lager beer with elements from both our breweries. Go outside, drink beer and commune with each other.

Deep Space

Space, an IPA named for an old friend of Half Acre, rarely leaves the walls of our brewery. There’s a stiff group of Space enthusiasts that frequently visit Half Acre. Whether it's by spending time in the shop or along the bar in the tap room, they've become pieces of our brewery. It’s fitting that a beer named for one of our first regulars has encouraged the proliferation of those that spend time with us.

So, to echo the cycle and layer the positive with additional rings, we made Deep Space.  A chasm of pits and peaks, swollen with caramel and sap.  The water is chummed, here come the sharks.

  • on draft only
  • 10% ABV
  • release date: 4/13/16

Grimalkin Amorphotron

In a dark corner of the Uniplex there’s lies a region where disparate forces fold into and quarrel with one another; A place where energies blend into a deformity of unknown quantity...

Gigantic and Half Acre Present A Ginormous and Big Hugs Saga:  GRIMALKIN AMORPHOTRON

A melded, single skinned war creature, half Mecha, half Kaiju, that lives to walk the dark lands. We offer you its liquid rite:

Some parts imperial stout, some features Double IPA.
A black beer north of the 10% ABV equatorial dividing line.
Munich, Pale and Roasted Malts mix with Naked Oats to embolden its torso.
Crystal, Mosaic and Simcoe hops empower its limbs.
A warrior’s brewhouse schedule paves the way for a time honored cellar regime.
A secondary layer of dry hops combs its coat to realize its exterior sheen.

Its yours now. Tame its wild nature and live within its power.

Powder Blue

We've been brewing beers with Short's since 2010, when we discovered at a conference that we both hold a deep respect for the boognish. Powder Blue is a new one, an IPA featuring Mosaic, El Dorado and 130 gallons of pureed blueberry, drink it and set the course.

The following are some excerpts from Ween's tour diaries. Nothing overtly special, just an investment in the oddity of everyday.

2003-07-25 Pittsburgh, PA – Club Laga - arrived the night before, back in old pittsburgh. aaron swears that i promised we'd never play pittsburgh again but i recall saying we'd never play club metropol again. either way, this club was better for sure, nice folks and a sold out show. experienced the backlash from our all request concert a few nights before, people were calling out for "where'd the cheese go" most of the night. i thought we played a little sloppy, but it was actually a pretty eventful show for opening night. topless girls all over the stage during lmlyp to close the show, a few fights, and some dude literally broke thru a wall to get into our dressing room before getting tossed from the club and pummeled by bouncers. ironically enough, me and glenn and this same guy (the wallbreaker) went down the street for hot dogs and french fries like 15 minutes after this incident. ween is all about pleasing the kids, everyone knows that.

2002-04-23 Lexington, KY - Kentucky Theatre - This was our first time in Lexington and I was impressed by how clean the city was---also, there wasn't a soul on the street after dark. Mick Preston and I generally will walk or drive as far as we have to go to find a Waffle House when we're on tour, but we ended up settling for a Huddle House instead, which to my surprise was every bit as delicious--even though it's an obvious rip-off of the real thing, right down to the pecan waffles and scattered and smothered hash browns and shit. This was a really cool old theater, and directly adjacent to the concert was the Miss Gay Kentucky drag queen paegant. I don't remember much about this show, except I thought we played pretty solid and we hit some bar afterwards and then some house party, and then a second trip to the Huddle House.

2003-10-08 Missoula, MT – MT University Theater - i don't remember much about this one either except that it was a good gig. some kids printed up counterfeit tickets and it caused a bit of a stir. i thought it was pretty punk rock and was honored in a way. we have been hearing about this town for awhile and finally made it there. unfortunately i didn't get to see any of it except for the hotel bar where i watched the yankees with some homeless guy who had a plate in his head.

SHRUB TUNDRA

We've been working with Dark Matter Coffee for a long time. Our minds aligned early over interests in excellent beverages, creativity and the curation of culture.

Shrub Tundra Coffee Brown Ale descended naturally from the fun we have making Big Hugs. It's a smaller, smashable beer -- cherry and chocolate on the nose, roasted and sweet with a bitter finale.

Coffee beers have power, come by and tune in.

DOUBLE DAISY CUTTER

DoubleDaisyCutter_2015-v1.jpg

Time to punch the clock on Double Daisy Cutter.

Brewed on our Braukon brewhouse, this batch of Double Daisy was about the 700th turn at our new brewery. Lee made the wort, most of the crew teased it through the cellar and the packaging guys are pushing it into bottles as I type.

We pride ourselves on consistency, and our new lab gives us better tools to call bullshit on ourselves, but coaxing plants through a process always yields adventure.  A sample yanked from the bright tank pre intravenous CO2 showed big flavor, some sharp tones, tropical flash in flavor and nose and an ample density that gives this beer the weight we’ve come to enjoy.

We release this beer on Friday, February 12th.  If you’re around, swing by our shop on Lincoln and drag home this fresh kill to your cave.

DETAILS

  • Release Date: 2/12/16
  • 22oz bomber: $9.99 (limit 6 per person)
  • 64oz growler refill: $20 (limit 64oz per person)

BAUME´ RYE STOUT

This year Baumé becomes Antoine’s Baumé.  We continue to dedicate this beer to the 18th century french chemist.  If you are a direct descendent of Antoine Baumé, please contact us.

High levels of chocolate, roast and rye drag you above the din of winter. A serving of Centennial and Falconer's Flight late in the boil push you deeper into an already swelling profile. Come have one and remember all the good fortune science has bestowed on man.

THE 16TH HUNT. - SOLVED!

It's the Hunt and it's January, which means everyone is eligible to play again. Whoever solves this riddle and finds the hidden token first will win a 5 gallon keg + party cups on us. The keg will vary based on availability. It's cold, get some friends over and warm up.

Built long ago to cure by breeze,
between lost birds and the freeze,
A red element painted on white,
summer theater, tonight!

EDIT - 01/25

Sonny solved this first Hunt of the New Year. He looked into the history of the old building on Lakeshore and Fullerton and it fit so he went out. After searching around in the cold with no luck, he turned around and went home to warm up. Then, he went back! About to give up a second time, he turned his flashlight out onto the water and noticed a large white rock. Sure enough, the word 'element' was spray painted in red and the token was hidden beneath it. Nice job, Sonny. Your spirit earned it.

The next round is going to be a bit different, stay tuned.

RULES

  • you must be 21 years or older to play

  • we will not require you to demolish, ruin, explode, damage, or trespass on anything

  • if it seems as though your clue is urging you to enter a business, we've already alerted that business as to what is going on and they're on board

  • the token can fit in the palm of your hand

  • you may only solve the Hunt and get the prize once per calendar year (excluding exceptions made by us)
